Unusually high downloads

Hello,

I’ve just run the usage stats for books on our network for the period July to September 2025. I am getting unusually high downloads for the number of visitors and I’m wondering why that might be. One extreme example is a little-used book with 43 visitors and 397 downloads. With another title the % of downloads against the number of visitors hovers around 30% normally but in the latest quarter it’s shot up to 127%. Has anyone noticied a similar issue? Any insights from the community are gratefully received. Thank you!

Hi Helen,

Same here, our downloads to visitors rate is usually a pretty stable 21-25% but the last three months it’s up to 154% on average - for some titles it’s nearly 700%!

We’re also seeing a lot of traffic as of late in our infrastructure. Much of it is expected beginning of the fall term bandwidth, but there are also a lot more bots, specifically AI bots that seem to be ingesting content. The good actors identify themselves as bots or AI bots and comply with ‘noai, noaiimages’ directives in robots.txt files, but there are also others that misidentify themselves and do not follow good net citizen etiquette.
