We’re excited to announce that the Google Docs Importer is now live, giving you a new way to bring content into Pressbooks. This feature enables authors to import content directly from Google Docs into Pressbooks, making it easier than ever to move content, collaborate with colleagues, and publish with confidence.
Why use the Google Docs Importer?
Many authors already use Google Docs to draft and collaborate before publishing. With the new importer, you can bring that content into Pressbooks while preserving more of your document’s formatting than is possible with Word imports.
The Google Docs Importer preserves a wide range of formatting, including:
- Headings and text formatting
- Lists and tables
- Images with alt text
- Footnotes
- Glossary terms
- And more
After connecting Pressbooks to your Google account, you can chose which file you wish to import by clicking the “Select from Google Drive” button.
What to expect
The Google Docs Importer is available now to all Pressbooks authors. You’ll find it alongside the other import options in Pressbooks.
To ensure the best import experience we suggest that you:
- Import directly from a Google Doc rather than a Microsoft Word file. If your content is currently in Word, consider opening it in Google Docs first before importing into Pressbooks.
- Avoid using Google Docs tabs, as they are not currently supported.
