Pressbooks LTI in Blackboard auto-registers new users?

Hello,

Yesterday I showed a group of learning technologists how the LTI function between Pressbooks and Blackbaord works. Some of them tried it out, even though they don’t have any books, and they now appear on my list of users. Is there a way of preventing this? No problem if not - I’ll just delete them.

Thanks,

Helen

Hi @HelenMoore – that’s normal and expected behaviour. As part of the LTI launch sequence, the LTI platform (your LMS) communicates with the LTI provider (in this case, Pressbooks) and initiates a secure session. This session can be used to launch private resources from the provider, to send user information from the LMS to the provider, or to send grade information from the provider to the LMS. In order to do this, the provider must create an account for the user who initiated the launch from the platform. In Pressbooks, that means either authenticating existing users or creating a new users if one did not previously exist. The permissions given to these users are carefully scoped by the LTI tool, but launching an LTI link will always result in a new user being created if it did not previously exist. You can delete them after testing, if/as desired – as a network manager your user list has some filtering capacities that can help you do this quickly and efficiently. I recommend looking for users that either
a) have no role in any books, or
b) only have the ‘subscriber’ role in 1 book, as this is the role that’s typically provisioned by an LTI launch within a specific context

Hope that helps!

Excellent. Thank you very much, that’s helpful.
