Pressbook theme issues

I recently tried to install an open-source Pressbooks instance using Cpanel. As required, I created a multi-site WordPress and then downloaded the most recent versions of the theme plugins (McLuhan and Aldine). My version of WordPress is 7.0.3 with PHP 8.4. When I tried to upload the plugins, the system indicated that it could not install either of the plugins.

I have McLuhan (pressbooks-book-2.36.0.zip) and Aldine(pressbooks-aldine-1.27.0.zip) as my theme files. Neither of them will install in my multi-site WordPress 7.0.3 or 7.0.4. Is there something I am missing? I was hoping to install the latest Pressbooks version (pressbooks-6.45.0).

Hi Isaac,

It’s great to hear that you want to try out Pressbooks!

Could you share the exact error message you are seeing, or clarify what happened when the system indicated it couldn’t install the plugins?

If possible, please share a screenshot or a URL so our team can investigate further.

Thank you,

Ho Man

I uninstalled my newer Pressbook instance but these files still fail to update an older Pressbooks installation with the following message:

This was for the McLuhan pressbooks-book-2.36.0 plugin.

Hi,

Please install both Pressbooks Book and Aldine as themes under Network Admin → Themes → Add New → Upload Theme.

Pressbooks Book: upload the ZIP and Network Enable it.
Aldine: upload the ZIP, Network Enable it, then activate it on the root network site.

Both should be under wp-content/themes/, not wp-content/plugins/.

Let me know if you run into any other issues.

Good day,

Ho Man

That is exactly what I was doing in the screenshot. As I said, I have another older instance of Pressbooks that I administer. This workflow results in what you see in the screenshot.

Hi,

To install a theme in WordPress multisite, you can go directly to:

https://your-domain.com/wp-admin/network/theme-install.php?upload

For your awareness, Pressbooks does not yet officially support PHP 8.4, although our current automated tests are passing successfully.

If you encounter any issues while running Pressbooks on PHP 8.4, please let us know. Your feedback will help us identify potential compatibility concerns and better prepare for broader support of the updated PHP version in the future.

Let me know if that works,

Ho Man
