Open Source SMTP plugin for Pressbooks

Hello Team,

We’re happy to share an open-source SMTP plugin for Pressbooks with full multisite support.
This helps the community avoid closed, commercial plugins and saves approximately $40 per year per site.

The plugin is released under the MIT License, so you’re free to use it, modify it, and extend it however you like.

Key Features

  • Reliable SMTP Delivery: Configure dependable SMTP-based email delivery for your WordPress / Pressbooks setup.

  • Multisite Support: Centralized, network-wide configuration designed specifically for WordPress multisite installations.

  • Email Analytics: Track email delivery status, opens, bounces, and overall engagement metrics.

  • Webhook Integrations: Real-time webhook support for Amazon SES and Brevo (SendinBlue).

  • Test Email & Diagnostics: Built-in tools to send test emails and quickly troubleshoot delivery issues.

  • Email Logging: Detailed logs of all outgoing emails to aid debugging and auditing.

We hope this plugin adds real value to the Pressbooks community, and we welcome feedback, contributions, and improvements from everyone.

Hi Ugen – welcome to our community forum! Glad to have you here and grateful to learn about your interest to contribute useful tools to our open source community. Can you tell us a little more about who you are and why you’ve worked on this project? Are you self-hosting a Pressbooks instance somewhere?

Hello Steel,

I was enabling Pressbooks self-hosting for a project at Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Open University with @sushumna of JustWrite. During the course of this work, we identified a common requirement that many universities are likely to face.

To address this, we initiated the development of an open-source plugin that can be reused and extended by other institutions adopting Pressbooks. Our intent is to contribute back to the community and reduce dependency on closed or commercial alternatives.

I wanted to share this context with you and would be happy to discuss the initiative further or align it with the broader Pressbooks ecosystem.

Regards,
Ugen
