@EDU_Managers
We are excited to let you know about a new partnership between Pressbooks and EBSCO, a company that provides information and search services to academic libraries. This partnership will boost book “discoverability,” making it easier for academic communities to find work created and shared via Pressbooks Directory. As you may know, the vast majority of the 5,000+ books listed in Pressbooks Directory are openly-licensed. By adding Pressbooks Directory metadata to EBSCO’s popular search services, we look forward to seeing how this partnership helps raise the profile of open educational resources (OER) in mainstream academia.
Please read this blog post, which provides helpful detail about this partnership and what it means for the Pressbooks community.
Here are the main points you should be aware of as a network manager:
- Partnership: We have a new, non-exclusive partnership with EBSCO to incorporate metadata from Pressbooks Directory books into their faculty-focused search tools. Metadata is the information that describes books, such as title, author, subject, licensing, etc. No money was exchanged as part of this partnership.
- Data Sharing: On a regular basis, we will share Pressbooks Directory’s open book metadata with EBSCO, so that any book included in Pressbooks Directory is discoverable by EBSCO’s Faculty Select and EDS search services. Pressbooks refreshes the metadata shared with EBSCO on a regular basis, so sharing choices can be adjusted at any time.
- Boosting Book Discoverability: Searches rely on “Book Info” metadata, so authors can increase their book discoverability by improving the quality of their book metadata.
- Opting Out of Discoverability: The simplest way to opt out of the EBSCO partnership is to exclude book(s) from Pressbooks Directory. Authors do this in the book settings, and network managers do this in the network options settings.
We encourage you to communicate directly with your authors and other stakeholders if you feel it is important for them to know about this new Pressbooks+ EBSCO partnership. To make things easy for you, we have provided sample communications for you to use or adapt for your community:
