New Pressbooks Book Theme Available: hooks (named for bell hooks)

What’s happening

We have released a new open source book theme, hooks, named in honor of writer, theorist, and educator bell hooks: https://github.com/pressbooks/pressbooks-hooks.

If you self-host a Pressbooks network, you can add this to your bedrocks via composer require pressbooks/pressbooks-hooks and network activate it like you would for any other book theme.

@EDU_Managers For hosted/enterprise networks, this new theme has now replaced the premium “Andreessen” theme. The underlying design and functionality are the same; what has changed is the theme’s name and branding.

Why?

Pressbooks book themes are named after people whose work and contributions we admire. We want our past naming decisions to better align with our organization’s values. Renaming the Andreessen theme in honor of bell hooks and releasing it for open source users is a small but meaningful step in that direction.

What this means for you

If you had a book that was previously using the Andreessen theme, no action is required on your part. Those books will now show hooks as their active theme; the visual presentation should remain the same. The Andreessen theme is no longer available on your network, but hooks is now available in its place.

If you have questions or notice anything unexpected in your books after this change, please reply to this thread or contact your network manager/Pressbooks premium support.
