Invisible code is not helpful

We’re working on a book that requires non-breaking spaces (following the AGSM and the CMoS, certain things require non-breaking spaces), but it’s impossible to tell whether they are there or not owing to the fact that the text editor doesn’t show them. After much poking around to find a solution, it seems the text editor converts almost all html coded characters into UTF-8 characters, and then doesn’t show them. This renders looking at the text option about as useful as a cheeseburger to a drowning elephant.

We’ve noticed other occasions where the code we typed in magically dissapeared, or some other invisible code seemed to be having an effect.

There seem to be some technical work arounds, but it would be much more useful and practical if we could just see the code we wanted to work with.
