Hypothesis in Pressbooks in Canvas

Hi all,

I was talking today with instructional designers supporting a department that utilized Pressbooks for course materials, and they noted that students have been asking instructors to create more downloadable versions (exports) of their books so that they could use annotation and highlighting tools.

I talked to them about Hypothesis and this brought me to a question about how Hypothesis functions when a Pressbooks book is brought into a course in Canvas.

Would a student reading a Pressbooks book within the LMS be able to use Hypothesis (when enabled on that book) in the same way as they would when reading it in the Browser?

Also, my institution now has Hypothesis integrated with our Canvas LMS. I’m not sure this would impact Pressbooks books but perhaps books without the Hypothesis plugin enabled would still be able to be annotated/highlighted using our tool?

Thanks for any guidance you can provide,
Lauren

Hi Lauren,
Great question! If Hypothesis is activated on a book, yes the student will be able to use it in the same way as they would reading it in the browser. They will have to sign into their Hypothesis account just like they would in a browser outside the LMS.

If the reading in Pressbooks was set up with the Hypothesis integration in Canvas, students will be able to annotate the Pressbooks chapter that is assigned whether Hypothesis is activated on that book or not. It is great you are promoting Hypothesis to your faculty, I think it is a great tool for students.

Thanks John!
I’ve passed this along to the IDs and will also take a look at it myself in my Canvas sandbox. Thanks again - very helpful
